Interpretive Planning (PL)

The Planning phase is the initial design phase when key issues in the development of the exhibit are addressed:

  • What is the objective of the exhibit?
  • What are the target audiences?
  • What are the main themes and broad storyline of the exhibit?
  • What is the available exhibit space?
  • What is the project budget?
  • What artifacts, objects and images are available for use in the exhibit?

Working closely with the client, the Alchemy of Design team will develop a series of planning products that answer these questions and that lay a foundation for the subsequent design phases.

Exhibit Planning Products:

  • Exhibit plan (outlines the objective of the exhibit, the target audiences, the main themes and broad storyline, the available exhibit space, the project budget, and the available objects, artifacts and images)
  • Exhibit narrative (provides a written description of the potential visitor experience and the storyline of the exhibit)
  • Conceptual floor plan and conceptual exhibit sketches
  • Concept (Schematic) Design (CD)

With the approval of the Exhibit Planning phase, the Alchemy of Design team will develop a Concept Design package that includes a conceptual floor plan and concept elevations of individual exhibits. A written exhibit outline organizes topics into a storyline, describes specific content to be presented in each exhibit, and provides descriptions of suggested exhibit methods for delivering the content to visitors.

Note that the Concept Design phase occurs in two submittals, a first-draft Concept Design Package and, after client review, a revised Concept Design Package.

Concept Design Products:

  • Conceptual floor plan
  • Perspective study sketches
  • Concept elevation drawings of individual exhibits
  • Exhibit outline (organizes and presents detailed exhibit content along with suggested exhibit methods)
  • Sample exhibit text
  • Sample graphic design layouts
  • Initial cost estimate

Design Development (DD)

With the approval of Concept Design documents, the project moves to a higher level of detail in Design Development. During this phase, specific exhibit elements are developed, exhibit text and audiovisual scripts are written, graphic layouts are developed, objects and images are cataloged, and interactive exhibit concepts are evaluated.

Note that this phase occurs in two submittals, a first-draft Design Development Package and, after client review, a revised Design Development Package.

Design Development Products:

  • Detailed site plans and floor plans
  • Plan and elevation drawings of each exhibit
  • Draft construction drawings (casework construction, interactive exhibits, artifact placement, audiovisual hardware systems, lighting requirements, finish schedules)
  • Color and material board
  • Exhibit manuscript (exhibit text and assignment of images and artifacts to specific exhibits)
  • Graphic layouts (including text, illustrations and image selections)
  • Final catalog of exhibit artifacts and images, including source information
  • Audiovisual scripts
  • Cost estimate

Final Design (FD)

Upon approval of Design Development documents, the alchemy of design team will take the design to its completed level of detail in the Final Design fabrication package, which will be submitted to the client for final approval.

Final Design Products:

  • Final detailed site plans and floor plans
  • Final plan and elevation drawings of individual exhibits
  • Final construction drawings, including all fabrication details and specifications (casework construction, interactive exhibits, artifact placement, audiovisual hardware systems, lighting requirements, finish schedules)
  • Final color and material board
  • Final graphic layouts including final text, illustrations and image selections
  • Final catalog of exhibit artifacts and images, including source information
  • Final audiovisual scripts
  • Final cost estimate

Fabrication

The Alchemy of Design serves as fabrication liaison for many of its projects. Even if we are not the main conduit, we believe that the continuity of keeping the original designer and vision holder in the process through installation to be very important.
